Tours of The News Centre:

This is a pictorial tour of The News Centre showing visitors what they can expect on one of our organised tours of the centre. Each tour group will have an experienced tour guide - usually about 10 visitors to one guide, and we prefer young people to be in Year 5 or above (for safety reasons).

Choose a department from the drop-down menu to view picture.

Tours for schools and colleges are arranged for any week day, usually beginning at 10.00am or 1.30pm (but we can be flexible to suit individual requirements) and last about one and a half hours. There is a charge of £1.50 per head for local children with accompanying adults/teachers free.

Evening tours can be arranged for any organisation or group wishing to look round The News Centre. Experienced tour guides will each take about 10 visitors round the centre. These tours start at either 6.00pm or 6.30pm and last about one and a half hours. There is a charge of £2.50 per person. A booking form can be electronically sent to the education services department to reserve a tour date and time.

Work experience opportunities at The News Centre:

Trident and private work experience placements are available within The News Centre. The following is a guide to placements which are available:

Finance:
Working with a supervisor in accounts. The work involves computerised accounts, invoices and billing, giving you a thorough insight into the financial side of a very large company. Quite a lot of computer inputting and clerical tasks involved - not just working with figures.

Newspapers in Education:
Working in our education centre with young people from local schools who are creating their own front pages from current news, copied from our news computers - probably the closest placement to real journalism that we offer. No computing skills necessary as computer training is given, but should have an interest in working with and helping young people.

Bryoney's Drama Site

Sales and promotions:
Working in a department which liaises closely with newsagents and direct delivery teams, as well as events, which stages large shows such as the motor show, boat show and weddings shows. Quite a lot of computer inputting and filing.

Advertising-copy/admin clerk:

Practical work involving inputting invoice details, tracking adverts and client requirements and planning newspaper pages as an exercise. Quite a lot of computer inputting required.

Distribution:
Working in the mailroom area of the press hall where newspapers are wrapped, strapped and distributed by vans. Occasional van work with delivery drivers.

Carpentry/ maintenance:
Working with the company carpentry and maintenance team on painting, general woodworking and structural jobs.

Warehousing:
Working in the warehouse of our leaflet bureau, distribution of client orders in vans and general work about the warehouse. Occasional light lifting work.

In addition to work placements for students pre 16 we also offer editorial and photographic work experience for local graduates and undergraduates and those students already undertaking a recognised NCTJ journalism training course.
