The News distributes a passport-sized booklet with about 15 newspaper-related tasks in it which can be easily incorporated into the national literacy hour in junior and primary schools under the heading of non-fiction.

The passports come with covers in Blue (Year 6), Red (Year 5) and Green (Year 4) and offer tasks appropriate to these age groups.

Visits to schools and colleges

The News is a popular and well-read local daily newspaper. It is the source of information for a majority of the local population and as such details of its production, news-gathering, advertising and distribution and much sought-after by schools, colleges and universities. Media and communication courses are obvious choices for presentations about The News. Many junior and primary schools invite education services into the school to talk to children about The News in national curriculum work about newspapers.

There is no charge for this service.

Jeff Legg is a qualified and very experienced teacher within the The News education services department and works with about 7,000 children every year on newspaper-related activities. Whether it is a whole year group of 300 young people or a GCSE group of 12 we are happy to visit schools and colleges to work with young people.

We have many exercises to work through with young people giving them a flavour of the many different aspects of newspaper production, story writing and finance.

To arrange for a member of the education services team to visit your school or college, for a discussion or to make a presentation, please contact us at:

Outside speaking to afternoon and evening meetings.

Womens' Institute groups, Retired Civil Service groups and such are often on the lookout for visiting speakers to address their meetings. A popular topic is the local newspaper and we are happy to accept invitations to such meetings to show how their local newspaper is produced, a history of the paper and the company and some interesting and fascinating facts about The News. Very often a talk about The News leads to a tour of The News Centre.
