Gun ports left open

The Imperial ambassador Van Der Delft records that the Mary Rose sank towards evening, drowning all 500 men on board except for about 25 to 30.

He received an account from a survivor: `Was told by a Fleming among the survivors that when she heeled over with the wind, the water entered by the lowest row of gun ports which had been left open after firing.'

Sir George Carew

Sir George Carew was the newly-appointed Vice Admiral who perished on the Mary Rose.

sir george carewHis uncle Sir Gawain Carew, who was on another ship when the Mary Rose sank, gave an eyewitness account which implied that indiscipline added to the disaster.
He sailed past and when he asked Sir George what the problem was on the Mary Rose, he answered that `he had the sort of knaves whom he could not rule'.
